About

We are a community. A community of curl wearers. Our skin tones are rich and varied and so it stands to reason that our curls will be varied too. From teeny tiny coils to loose waves we are curl wearers. We wear our hair in Afros, braids, twists, cornrows. Bantu knots, threaded and all this before we begin adding extensions, or wearing wigs and weaves. What started off as a place for one mildly irritated natural Hair Professional to just vent about the good, the bad and the ugly of the Black Hair Industry (read natural hair community, natural hair police etc) has become a fireside where all the players, the cast of this chunk of a trillion dollar industry come together to hear each other’s side of the story.

This is not a space of judgement but rather of healing. We discuss touchy subjects in a kind but at times firm way and that is why we do it around the fire. The inspiration section will feature images of individuals championing natural hair every single day. And we all do that right? That means we celebrate ourselves and each other. We will celebrate those working in the public eye (past and present) who showcase our natural hairstyles sometimes at the risk of losing certain opportunities. We will also celebrate our melanin models who rock their natural on the catwalks despite the challenges this sometimes presents. We are also going to make a lot of noise about you the ‘out of the public eye’ natural hair wearer. You are the ones who choose each day to embrace your hair, recognising that it is enough and it is beautiful. Images like words are powerful so we want the next generation of curl wearers to know their hair is perfectly acceptable, classy and professional.

Are you a client? Do you pay someone to do your hair or to teach you about hair? Do you share hair advice? Do you charge people money for braiding or advice? Do you own a salon or make products? Do you sell hair products and accessories?  If you answered yes to one or more of these questions then in my sweetest voice I beg, do sit down and join us around the fireside. You are welcome. Salibonani
